Rosin Basics

What is Rosin? How is it made?

Rosin is a solventless extraction made through the mechanical process of applying heat and pressure to “press” out the terpene and cannabinoid rich resin from cured flower, sift and kief. This process occurs near instantaneously and requires virtually no professional expertise in the field of botanical extractions. The art of extracting Rosin uses heat to melt the glandular domes of the trichrome off of the base material. This resin rich sap will then reconstitute on the parchment paper, ready for collection. After scraping the parchment paper, the waxy residue collected will be clean and ready to dab.

How much Rosin can I expect from my material?

This is another question we get often, but cannot ever provide an exact answer. Basically the term “Garbage in, Garbage out” is a FACT with pressing. Rosin will typically taste very much like your starting material smells so using the best material available is always recommended. We have seen results as low as 5.5% with low quality material and have also seen 31%+ with Grade “A” material. Your best bet is to press a couple of .8g test bags to see what you can expect from your material before loading your extraction bags.

What yields can I expect to get?

Yields range significantly and depends largely on the quality of the materials used. Great material in = terrific rosin.

  • Trim: 3% - 8%
  • Shake: 8% - 15%
  • Flower: 15% - 30%
  • Kief / Dry Sift: 30% - 60%+
  • Bubble: 30% - 70%+

Note: Adequate application of pressure is important to achieve optimal yields and these figures are based on averages we have tested using properly packed rosin bags. Results may vary and depend heavily on your material as well as the skill of the rosin press operator.

Which Micron Bag Can I Use?

For kief, dry sift and bubble, use a 36 micron or 72 micron bag. 72 micron rosin bags will offer higher yields compared to 36 micron rosin bags, but the 36 micron bags will provide the highest quality product.

For flower, trim, and shake, use a 115 micron or 90 micron bag. You will get the highest yield from a 115 micron rosin bag compared with a 90 micron rosin bag, but the 90 micron bags will give you more filtration and slightly higher quality product.

  • 36 micron: Most filtration available, highest quality output rosin for use with kief, dry sift and bubble
  • 72 micron: High level of filtration, increased yields over 36 micron when pressing kief, dry sift and bubble
  • 90 micron: Higher level of filtration for use with flower, trim, and shake rosin pressing
  • 115 micron: Ideal level of filtration and high yielding for use with flower, trim, and shake rosin pressing.
How much pressure do I need?

The pressure needed to extract Rosin from your starting material will vary depending on the following factors: Surface Area, Freshness, Heat Applied, Amount of Material over the surface area, Type of Material (Cured Flowers, Dry Sift, Bubble, etc). As a general guideline, the more heat you apply, the less pressure you will need (to a certain extent). From our experience, many strains will press very nicely at around 1000 – 1500 psi per inch of material being pressed in the lower temp range of 190 – 215 degrees.

What are the recommended press settings?
Cold Pressing: Press at 160°F - 190°F for 1 to 5 minutes or longer. Cold pressing often results in a malleable, batter consistency terpene-rich rosin, but it comes with a sacrifice in yield.
Hot Pressing: Press at 190°F - 225°F for 40 seconds to 3 minutes. Hot pressing produces a sappy or shatter-like rosin. For better terpene preservation, try pressing at at 215°F or below. Generally, the hotter you press, the higher yield you’ll get. However, anything over 230°F generally has a notable drop in quality and terpenes.
Flowers: Flowers can be pressed at 190°F - 225°F for 30 - 180 seconds.
Kief, Dry Sift: Refined precursors are usually pressed at 165°F - 195°F for 60 - 130 seconds.
For flowers, we recommend starting at 210°F for 85 - 115 seconds and evaluating from there. Usually, pressing at 210°F results in strong yield, great consistency, and high terpene preservation.
Don't forget you can always double press your bags/pucks. Save your pressed leftovers to make edibles!
What does a pre-press mold do?

Pre-press molds will help increase your rosin yields with any material and help to prevent bag blowouts, especially with kief, dry sift and bubble. This is achieved by applying pressure to your material inside the bag so that it's more evenly packed and distributed to the seams for easier oil extraction.
